The Cook County Small Business Source: A Strategic Ally for Veteran-Owned Businesses

Cook County Source + CVBO

Running a small business in Cook County is hard work—especially when you’re also navigating life after military service. Balancing customers, cash flow, hiring, marketing, and compliance can feel like a full-time mission on its own. The good news is you don’t have to tackle it alone.

The Cook County Small Business Source (“The Source”) is Cook County’s central hub for small business support, and it is a powerful strategic ally for Veteran-owned businesses across the Chicagoland area. The Source connects you with expert guidance, essential tools, and networking opportunities—all at no cost—to help your business grow and thrive.

As a Veteran business community, we see The Source as a key piece of the ecosystem that supports our members and their families.

What Is The Source?

Bureau of Economic Development

The Source is Cook County’s go‑to network for small business support. It coordinates a county‑wide network of Business Support Organizations (BSOs) that provide advising, training, and resources designed to help you at every stage of your journey—from idea to startup to growth.

Think of The Source as your trusted local partner for small business success in Cook County. Instead of trying to figure out which organization to call or which program to trust, you complete one simple intake form and get matched with a dedicated business advisor from their network. That advisor walks alongside you, helping you set goals and take concrete steps forward.

What The Source Offers Veteran Business Owners

The Source is built around three pillars: Expert Advising, Informative Events, and Valuable Resources. Together, these services give Veteran-owned businesses a complete support package.

Expert Advising at No Cost

The foundation of The Source’s work is its no‑cost, one‑on‑one business advising. Once you sign up, you are connected to a business advisor from a trusted BSO who brings in‑depth knowledge of finance, operations, marketing, and local regulations.

Your advisor can help you:

  • Create or refine your business plan
  • Build a realistic financial roadmap and understand your numbers
  • Prepare for bank loans, grants, and other funding opportunities
  • Improve day‑to‑day operations and staffing decisions

Because advising is ongoing, you can meet regularly as you implement changes—not just once and done. For Veterans who value accountability and clear direction, this relationship can be a game changer.

Informative Events and Workshops

The Source also offers a steady calendar of in‑person and virtual events that cover the topics small businesses struggle with most. Workshops hosted with partner organizations—many located right here in Chicago and suburbs across Cook County—dive into areas like access to capital, financial statements, legal basics, marketing, and government contracting.

These events are a smart way to:

  • Learn from experts and ask questions in real time
  • Meet other entrepreneurs building businesses in your community
  • Stay current on new programs, regulations, and opportunities

Because many events are virtual, you can join from your shop, office, or even your home between other responsibilities.

Valuable Resources and Financing Information

The Source curates up‑to‑date resources and financing information for small business owners at every stage. Through their website and monthly e‑newsletter, you can access tools on topics like:

  • How to get your business ready to apply for funding
  • What lenders and grant programs look for in applicants
  • How to organize your finances and documentation
  • Where to find additional support—legal, technical, or industry‑specific

These resources are designed to be practical, not theoretical, and they come directly from advisors working with thousands of businesses across Cook County.

A Strong Network Behind The Source

Behind The Source is a powerful network of Business Support Organizations that serve different neighborhoods, industries, and communities across the county. Partners include organizations like Allies for Community Business, Greater Southwest Development Corporation, the Illinois Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, and the Women’s Business Development Center, among others.

For Veteran business owners, this means you gain access to:

  • Advisors who understand your specific industry
  • Organizations rooted in Chicago neighborhoods, Southland communities, and suburban corridors
  • Connections to chambers, lenders, and community development partners

Instead of having to build these relationships from scratch, you plug into a ready‑made network that’s already focused on helping small businesses succeed.

The Source’s Impact Across Cook County

Since launching, The Source has delivered real results for small businesses county‑wide. Between 2021 and 2025, The Source helped distribute $67 million in grants to small businesses and served more than 36,000 businesses directly.

The majority of those businesses are owned by people who have historically been left out of traditional networks:

  • 81% of businesses served are owned by people of color
  • 61% are owned by women
  • 80% of clients surveyed in 2024 said they would recommend The Source to another entrepreneur

Cook County Source Impact

For us, these numbers matter. Veteran‑owned businesses often face similar barriers—limited capital, smaller networks, and less access to tailored guidance. The Source’s equity‑driven model makes it a natural partner for our community.

Why The Source Is a Strategic Resource for Veterans

Veterans bring leadership, resilience, and mission focus to entrepreneurship. The challenge is often translating those strengths into a civilian business environment that has its own rules, gatekeepers, and unwritten expectations.

The Source helps bridge that gap by:

  • Providing a single entry point into a complex ecosystem of lenders, advisors, and support organizations
  • Offering tailored, one‑on‑one advising that respects your time and experience
  • Delivering practical training and events that you can immediately apply to your business
  • Connecting you to funding and contract opportunities that match your stage of growth

When we pair the capabilities of Veteran entrepreneurs with the infrastructure of The Source, we build stronger companies, stronger neighborhoods, and a stronger regional economy.
